Portugali XCO karikasarja 3.etapp - Marrazes UCI C2

Once again we got to race in Marrazes, this time the track was dry, it was strange actually, always been a bit wet or very wet there. As the track is very much built, then the ground is taken there, and no maintenance had been done, so the track had many rain water drainage parts, and the ground was slippy from the loose gravel, easy to make mistakes.

The track itself has always suited me, majority of climbs not too steep and fast descends, were the faster you go, the more technical it becomes.

As usual a bit nervous, but on warm up the legs seemed quite light. I didn’t have a good start, coudnt clip in right away and meters went by, so the first climb I did were I was, there was no point of trying to overtake as the ground was so loose and would even lose time. But after some ups and downs I got into fourth position, the third not too far ahead, but the fifth close to me. By second lap I got my roll and started to think of catching the third girl, we always had some 20-30 second gap. So on third lap I really tried, but as the junior men had started before us now and then had to pass some guys and one after Joana but before me crashed in one downhill and I was guided to the alternative, which cost me time, as much as by the end of third lap the fifth was once again very close. That was mentally hard, I had pushed hard to catch the front and I had been caught up from behind. On fourth lap once again I was obliged to get the alternative on that descend, I already started to pray that no one would crash in front of me in the rock garden, as there you lose a lot more, luckily that didn’t happen. So for the fifth lap the last one, we with Ilda went together but just a tiny bit more closer to Joana. Ilda passed me on the first climb, I hopped on the wheel, she made mistake in one of the loose turns, I passed again, she after passed me again, I was riding in her wheel, seeing that she already had difficulty to control the bike in these loose conditions. On the longer climb in the middle of the course she pushed so hard, that I and Joana were on another pace, looked like Ilda would catch her, but next technical section Ilda made a mistake and once again I was on her wheel. I knew I wanted to be in front of her for the last technical sections. On a climb with roots there was two line choice, so I took the other than she was taking, we met for the turn, elbows touching and fighting (all friendly and competition situation) for who gets to go first. I got, next up hill section she did mistake on a root and I had a bit more ground on her, so now I just looked ahead, I put everything I had on the pedals, but not able to catch her. Was a real competition until the end!

After the race I felt I had really given all and today writing it I am in a zombie like situation, hadn’t been givin that much of myself.

Video from training and thanks for reading and watching! Until the next time!
