Portugali maantee karikasarja 2. ja 3. etapp - Albufeira ja Palmela

 Kuna kuulun ka Maiatose maanteenaiskonda ja olulisemaid maastikusõite sel nädalavahetusel ei olnud, siis läksin koos naistega lõunasse. 

Reedel sõitsime täitsa Algarve, laupäeval oli Albufeiras eraldistart. Tegelikult ma sain teada, et üks nädalavahetuse võistlustest on eraldi alles nädala keskel, kuna maantee ei ole sel aastal mulle eraldi eesmärgiks, siis ei olnud kursis ja ehk lootsin, et saame kahel päeval kassi ja hiirt mängida grupisõidus. 

Ilma eraldistardi varustuseta, tegin siis oma parima, eks mulle kunagi pole eraldi meeldinud, kuid proovisin jälgida watte ja vändapöörete arvu ja sai korralik 20km kimatud. Tulemusi hiljem nähes ei olnud ka poodium mägede taga, päris palju sõitjaid sõitsid ühte ajavahemikku.

Siis laupäeva pärastlõunal sõitsime natuke põhja poole, Lissaboni lähistele. Pühapäeval grupisõit Palmelas. Ootasin huviga mismoodi kujuneb välja meie võidusõit, aeg mängida. Meil eliidil oli sõita 5 ringi (75km kokku), kus oli laskumine, palju siledat ja laugem tõus, alles finishisse sõites peale ringe oli meil u 400m korralik põnts sees. Sellise profiiliga teadsin, et minul pole mõtet proovida ees ära minna, et eraldit sõita, see pole minu teema ja kuna polnud raskemat tõusu, kus kellegagi eest ära minna, siis teadsin et minu võimalus on viimane pool kilomeetrit. Ja kuskil seal teisel ringil nähes kuidas teised on, tundsin, et kui grupp tuleb koos lõpuni, on võit minu. Olin koguaeg eespool ja kontrollisin, et keegi tugevamatest eest ei lipsa. Aga näe oli üks keda ei osanud arvata, et eest saab, nimelt me stardime kõik koos, seeniorid ja kadetid ja juuniorid, seeniorid ja kadetid keerasid peale 3 ringe üles mäkke finishisse , juunioride peale 4 ringi, ja seal segaduses kui juuniorid olid oma positsioone otsimas et head finishit teha, läks üks eliit märkamatult ka mõned meetrid eest, kuna olin Fiona taga natuke karbis, ei saanud reageerida ja olin üllatunud kuidas tema ei läinud, oli sellises ei tea kas on vaja minna, ees oli kiire pikk laskumine, kus arvas, et saame grupikiirusega ta kätte. Aga vot ei saanud, mingitel hetkedel oli ta eest nii läinud, et ei näinud ka, seda ka lõputõusule minnes. Strava viimase tõusulõigu järgi sain talle 22 sekundit lähemale ja vot need 4 jäi ta veel ette, et kui tulemusi lihtsalt vaadata tunduks, et sõit lõppes grupifinishiga, kuid tegelikult oli jooksik meie eest, keda kätte ei saanud. Hiljem sain teada, et ta valitsev triatloni meister ja eraldistardi hõbe, ehk miks me talle kergelt järgi ei saanud, oli seletatud, ja tema laupäevast võistlust kaasa ei olnud teinud. Aga huvitav oli ja poodiumil lõpetada on alati hea!

As I am also in Maiatos women road cycling team and no important mountain bike races were not held this weekend I went with the girls to the south.

On Friday we drove all the way to the south, to Algarve. We had individual time trial on Saturday in Albufeira. Actually I only got to know its time trial and not two days of road racing in middle of the week. As road is not my priority this season I was not on track with calendar and well I hoped we were playing cat and mouse the two days.

Without any equipment for time trial and as I have never really liked time trial, I did a decent 20km while checking my watts and cadence during the ride. Seeing the results I saw that podium wasn’t that far and many riders had made similar times.

Then on Saturday afternoon we drove back to north near Lisbon. Sunday road race in Palmela. I looked forward how the race would unfold. We elite riders had 5 laps to do (75km total), where we had a descend , lots of flat and smooth uphill, only after the five laps we turned to a hard climb of about 400 m . So with this profile I knew it didn’t make sense for me to try and go and make a breakaway to time trial and as there was no hard climb to get a smaller group away, so for me the plan was to have it all in the final half kilometer. And somewhere in the second lap, checking the others ride and my feelings, I knew if we arrive all together, I will make it to win it. I was always in about the front, checking that no one strong would get away, but well that happened unexpectedly. As we all start together, seniors, cadets and juniors with us. The senior and cadets turned to the finish climb after 3 laps and juniors after 4 laps. In the confusion of juniors getting ready to go for the attacks one elite got some meters from us, I was little blocked behind Fiona and couldn’t react, and was so amazed that she let her go, she thought we would catch her easy on the speedy downhill with the group speed, but we didn’t , at points we didn’t even see her anymore also going for the climb, she had gone for good. Strava segment on the hard finish uphill I took 22 seconds from her, but the 4 seconds still remained, if by only checking the results one would think it was a bunch who all came to the climb together, but no it was the breakaway that stayed uncatched. Afterwards I learned that she is a triathlete and national champ and also silver in time trial, so that solved the puzzle how she was capable to stay off the group and she had not done the Saturday race. But it was interesting to race and ending up on podium is also nice!

But well the first win of the season still waits to be achieved! Thanks to everybody for supporting and cheering!
