Grand Raid BCVS

Tehtud see sõit. Soovitan teistelgi see linnuke kirja saada ;)

viimased meetrid / few last meters

valmis päevaks / ready for the day

õnnelik lõpetaja / happy finisher

mitte mina aga annab aimu / not me just a nice view

Few days have past since Grand Raid and the big tiredness is gone from the body. And as with every big challenge that has been accomplished, more the positive emotions are remembered.
When I signed up for the marathon in the winter (I suggest to make it early as possible, then its done and its on the to-do list) the goal was to finish the ride and have a check box marked for a big ride like this one. As it got closer I started to think what I have done, like why did I sign up, especially after some hard race where there was less kilometers and less climbing meters, but its was on my calendar so I just had to go for it.
So the day arrived, evening before it had rained and some parts of the course were not so easily passable as with dry conditions, but nothing extra difficult. We didn’t get rain, it was fresh and cloudy at start and all day was clouds and sun switching, which was good as then the sun couldn’t start to burn us.
I didn’t have time before the start to make any warmup, I had to wait in line for the toilet, as it was out of the question to go on the course without going to the toilet first.
Start was straight away climbing, it was uncomfortable with cold body, I had stitching ache under the ribs that I had damaged during winter. But I guess it was good that I wasn’t warmed, as then the competitor in me could not try to go with the first women, but had to start slow, by the middle of the climb I had warmed and my heart rate started to climb, but I rigorously made sure I never entered anaerobic zone as my strict goal was to finish the race.  The most I feared that I get empty by the last climbs and don’t have any power to move, but it didn’t happen and it makes me the most happy about thinking about the race, I had always power to go with good steady pace on the climbs. And there were plenty of climbing to do.
More in the beginning when the course went to some more technical tracks there was no one of asking way, and just went with the speed all were going, but as the tracks went wider at times and as the time went by there was less traffic on the course. I enjoyed the downhills a lot, especially those a bit more technical but still very fast sections. Before starting the last long climb I had a bit of a arguing with some guys. If I have possibility not to ask for way and just fly past I prefer to do it quietly. As many times when men hear a women voice shouting for way they just expect that if they try to go a bit faster then its ok. Many don’t understand that a woman can be faster and with ´bigger balls´ :D. And so it happened on nice flowy single track where I could go high speed almost not touching the brakes and enjoy cliding between the trees, I caught up with some men (as there had been so much suffering on the climbs I wasn’t prepared to let them spoil my fun) and asked for way, it took me and energy to get past and then got really mad with the last one that figured that he is fast enough and didn’t let me pass even on a spot were it was easy to give way. I shouted why he don’t let me have fun! The moment when the track went a bit wider I flew past him. It then didn’t take long time when the climb arrived and I could hear some grumpy question why I am not going so fast now, my answer was I am not touching my brakes :D Times like these I have this unpleasant feeling, like I didn’t do anything wrong and I cant help it that women bodies have less power in them, but that doesn’t mean that I am afraid to go down. I love to ride a bike and I make it was fast as possible up and down, so what if I appear a bit crazy sometimes.
So then it was the highest climb to make, where we reached 2800m sealevel. In the beginning of the climb I had this unpleasant feeling in my stomach and as I was pedaling seated I tought it’s the race food that is taking its toll, but as I pedaled standed I understood I had to make a toilet stop. But there was no place, the climb was going on the road with cliff on one side and wall on the other, and I was not prepared to squat in the middle of the track. So I pedaled with pain and looked for spot for 1-2 kilometers, finally I found some stones that could hide me. It was a different feeling continuing the climb, I started to get visual contact again with the guys I had shared some good pace during the long day. I started to measure the gap and started to tell myself, like this corner is just 50 seconds away etc. And measuring time like that I arrived to the top, in means until it could be pedaled, we had a part that had to be done by foot, and that is tough part! A long day is already behind, I had already been on my bike more than 8 hours, I went up sometimes pushing the bike sometimes carrying it. But finally even the part that seemed that wont never finish, finished (about 40 min of hike with the bike), then nice single part a bit down and the final climbing meters, again I didn’t look at the top, I just made each corner the next goal. And then wuhuuuu the last descend to the finish, well the last kilometer was the worst of the worst, it was very rocky and sharp stones, hands and body was so tired, all the time I had the feeling that now I cant handle the bike anymore, that now I will crash, but I didn’t and I finished it! I was done, all my muscles hurt, but I had done it!
Big thanks to Marc, who had been my supporting team this race, made sure I get to the start and then away from the finish, cheered at the middle and fed me during the race.
I think it’s a good challenge to anyone who wants to test themselves, the track is nothing too hard and when people have asked if I would do it again, then the answer is yes, but then for a good time, but for just doing it. But that would require some more riding on the course, knowing the climbs and the descends better. For me the key would be the climbs , to know how much its left for the next descend, as on the descends I already am I a bit crazy. :D

So its done. 126 km 5025m+ 9h38 and 6th woman on this edition and the first Estonian woman who has ever finished the race (if anybody knows differently, let me know). I suggest to others too to check this box of done Grand Raid ;)
